Lurline Fyffe
April 15, 1912 - October 16, 2011

Fyffe, Alice Lurline Hicks, “Bompa,” died peacefully on Sunday, October 16, 2011 at the age of 99 years. Loving mother of Harriet (Jack) Patrick and A. Edward Fyffe, Jr. Proud grandmother of Margaret (Steven) Haist, Bradford (Diana Effio) Patrick, and Deborah (Ryan) Wubben. Great-grandmother to Sarah “Kit” and Will Haist, Aliana Patrick, and Ella and Lars Wubben. Stepmother to Joanna Fyffe Braun. Survived by her “son-in-love” George Hanneman. Loving sister to Natalie Harris, Doris Schwolow, Alice (Jack) Ruth Wager, Billie (Charles) Gould, and James (Nina) Hicks. Further survived by step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, including her great-great-niece namesake Brooke Lurline Eisenhardt.

 

Preceded in death by her parents Nugent, Sr. and Alice Hicks, husband Albert E. Fyffe, Sr., brothers Nugent, Jr. and Jerry Hicks, and brothers-in-law Raymond Schwolow and Robert Harris.

 

Lurline was born on April 15, 1912 in Florence, South Carolina, graduating from high school at age 16. She obtained her B.A. in English at Winthrop University on scholarship. She earned her M.A. in Literature from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

 

Lurline was a teacher for most of her life, concluding her career in Whitefish Bay, WI. She taught with compassion and understanding, while holding her students and herself to high standards. She inspired an appreciation of all arts-especially ballet, to her children and their families.

 

Her ability to speak five languages added to her retirement. Lurline traveled to Egypt, Israel, and Mexico many times, and throughout the world. She also visited family in the Carolinas, Hawaii, Ohio, and Kentucky, enjoying spirited card games. Lurline put her family first and wherever there might be a need, she was there to help.

 

In her last years, Lurline was lovingly and skillfully cared for by the staff at Seven Oaks Nursing Home, Allay Hospice, and Dr. Johnstone to whom her family are immensely grateful.

 

Memorial services for Lurline will be held on Saturday, November 5, 2011 at 2 PM at Roundy Memorial Baptist Church (1250 E. Hampton Rd., Whitefish Bay). Inurnment in Sardis Baptist Church Cemetery in Sardis, SC, at 3PM on her 100th Birthday, April 15, 2012.
