Willard Gustav Danning
June 7, 1933 - February 21, 2026

MERTON, WI – Willard Danning, a man of profound faith, intellect, and service, passed away peacefully on February 21, 2026, at the age of 92.

Born on June 7, 1933, Willard lived a life defined by his dedication to others. A proud veteran of the United States Army, he carried a lifelong respect for military history and was known by family and friends as a true scholar of World War II. He was a Badger for life, proudly graduating from UW Madison. His passion for learning led him to earn a Master’s of Education, a degree he put to use for decades as a beloved teacher within the New Berlin Public Schools. Willard didn’t just teach subjects; he mentored generations of students with patience and wisdom.

Outside of the classroom, Willard found his greatest peace on the water and playing the piano. An avid boater, he spent countless hours navigating the lakes of Wisconsin. Willard could play piano by ear and spent innumerable hours at the keys. He also was a travel enthusiast, having seen the lower 48 states and many countries in Europe.

He was a pillar of North Avenue Baptist Church, where his faith was the compass for his life and his actions and his kindness touched many lives. He enjoyed singing in the choir as well as being a treasurer and fixing things around the church.

Willard’s greatest joy, however, was his family. He was the cherished husband of Lyla (née Lukach), with whom he shared 65 years of marriage. A lifetime of love and steadfast partnership.

He is survived by his daughter, Suzanne Fraser (Frank); his brother, Gerhardt Danning (Priscilla); and a legacy of grandchildren: Katie Danning, Nathan Fraser (Rachel), Lauren Gonzalez (Jorge), Jessica Arandia (Carlos), Ben Fraser, and Kaylee Radke. He was the "Great-Grandpa" to Elena, Emma, Enzo Gonzalez, and Cora Fraser.

Willard was preceded in death by his beloved son, Richard Danning (Mitze); his sister, Ingrid Kalister (Burt); and his parents.

Visitation and service will be held Friday, February 27, 2026, at Schmidt & Bartelt Funeral Home in Wauwatosa. Visitation will be from 4:00PM to 5:00PM with service at 5:00PM.
