Mary Beardsley Scheig
April 20, 1924 - July 30, 2018

(Nee Beardsley) Age 94, of Mequon passed away Monday July 30, 2018 at Newcastle Place. She is now reunited with Hank who she met on a blind date in 1943 in Iowa City and preceded her in death. She was born April 20, 1924 in New Virginia, IA. She is survived by her daughter, Kathryn Charlotte Scheig of Whitefish Bay, WI, son, William (Rebecca) Beardsley Scheig and grandchild, Alison Christine of St. Louis Park, MN, brother Dan Richard (Patricia) Beardsley of Springfield, VA, nieces and nephews.

Mary graduated June 8, 1946 from the University of Iowa in Iowa City in the morning and married her Henry Frederick Scheig in the afternoon. Mary is preceded in death by her parents, William S. Beardsley (Governor of Iowa) and Charlotte Manning Beardsley, brother Billy, James (Lois) Blaine, her sister Charlotte (Doyle), nephew, Tom, daughter Margaret Ann Scheig and grandson, Andrew Beardsley Scheig.

Mary was a member of the Appleton Area School District Board of Education (1981-1987). She was President (1982-1985), Vice President (1981-1987); Appleton Parks and Recreation Commission (1981- 1987) and Appleton Library Board.

She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (1999-present). As a child, she had anticipated being a member of this group. She joined in Fort Myers, FL and transferred to the Milwaukee group in 2004. After retiring, Henry and Mary spent their winters in Fort Myers and their summers at their cottage in Door County. In 2004, they moved back to WI and made their home at Newcastle Place-Mequon continuing to spend summers in Sturgeon Bay.

Mary was an avid reader and instilled that love with her children. Her father always told his children if they were too noisy, “To go read a book”. This was no punishment for Mary. She also enjoyed needlepoint and cross stitching, golfing, cross country skiing (at age 60, her son taught her to downhill ski) and traveling. She visited all 7 continents with Hank.

She has requested that no formal services be held, private family interment Riverside Cemetery. Please celebrate her life in your own way, remember her fondly and if so desired, memorials in her name to Rogers Hospital-Oconomowoc on behalf of the Andrew Scheig Memorial and The Land Trust of Door County.

The family of Mary will be eternally grateful to Dr. Dirk Steinert for treating Mary and Hank and to thank the staff of Newcastle Place for their care.
