I acted in one production with Prof. Syburg at Notre Dame: he played God and I played Jesus in the "Medieval Mystery Plays," so we were onstage father and son. After all these years, I still remember the robustness of his stage presence and the grace and dignity of his person, as well as his wry humor. My condolences to his family.

Fred was the first professor I met prior to coming to ND. I am deeply saddened to learn of his death. He was patient enough with me to give me the priviledge of working on several productions while at school. I think of him often as I now teach film at a local University. Please go gently, Fred, into that good night.

My condolences on the passing of one of my favorite ND professors. I will never forget the one truly valuable piece of acting criticism anyone ever gave me. In my sophomore year, after a fairly awful soliloquy from Julius Caesar, Prof. Syburg said to me: "Mr. Dolan, the only thing you have in common with Cassius is that lean and hungry look."

I am so sorry that I did not know he was so close here in Milwaukee...I could have trotted out my Cassius soliloquy for him one more time and see if I had learned anything over the years.

Requiescat in pace, Professor Syburg!

May the Lord bless and keep his family.

Respectfully,

Joe Dolan, 1984

I was so sorry to learn of Fred's death. He and Jane were two of the finest and most talented people I ever worked with in the theatre at Notre Dame-St. Mary's. What great memories I have, and what great hearts, minds, and souls he and Jane had. My love to all his family.

My sincere sympathy to Fred's family. I first met Fred when I moved into Hawthorne Terrace, and just across the hall from Fred on the 4th Floor. I came to appreciate his insight on many subjects, especially his keen knowledge of classical music. We missed him so much when he moved to San Camillo.
