In Loving Memory of Robert “Bob” Schafer
A Life Well Lived, A Legacy of Love
Robert “Bob” Schafer lived a remarkable 99 years, filled with love, laughter, curiosity, and a lifetime of cherished memories.
Throughout his nearly century-long life, Bob witnessed an ever-changing world, embraced life’s many experiences, and built a beautiful legacy that will live on through the generations of his family.
Bob was a true gentleman in every sense of the word. He was unfailingly kind, gracious, and thoughtful, never speaking an unkind word about anyone. His warm smile, which he wore often, and his famously expressive eyebrows, which revealed exactly what he was thinking, were just a few of the qualities that made him so endearing to those who knew him.
Bob had a genuine appreciation for the finer things in life. He loved travel, art, good food, fine wine, and, of course, sweets. He possessed an extraordinary intellectual curiosity, with wide-ranging interests in art, politics, religion, and history. He was an accomplished photographer, documenting decades through film with an eye that felt intimate and evocative. He was a lifelong learner who delighted in exploring the world around him.
Above all, Bob treasured his family. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, and an even more extraordinary grandfather and great-grandfather. His love for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren knew no bounds. Even at 97 years old, he could still be found getting down on the floor to play with his youngest great-grandchild — a beautiful reflection of his playful spirit and the joy he found in being surrounded by family.
He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Audrey; his three children, Mary, Tom, and Bob; his grandchildren, Alexandra Wildes (Rob), Sam Steele (Lauren), Chelsea Steele, Robert Schafer (Maria), Ronin Schafer, and Chloe Monnier; and his great-grandchildren, Carter, Audrey, and Jackson Steele, and Teddy Wildes.
He is also remembered with love by Steve Leys and Amy Schafer, and by Jhousy Leon, who held an especially cherished place in Bob and Audrey’s lives.
While saying goodbye is never easy, there is comfort in knowing that a life so beautifully lived leaves behind so much to treasure. Bob’s legacy is not measured simply by his 99 years, but by the kindness he extended, the love he gave so freely, and the countless lives made better by knowing him.
His memory will live on in the stories shared around family tables, in the smiles of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and in the generations who will carry his love and legacy forward.
Rest peacefully, Bob. Your life was a gift, your kindness was extraordinary, and you will be deeply loved and forever remembered.
