Robert Paul Hesselgrave, Jr., age 61, passed away on October 21, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born on March 17, 1965, Robert lived a life defined by hard work, generosity, and devotion to those he loved. He is survived by his beloved wife, Dawn Hesselgrave, of 41 years. Also surviving are two children, Stephaney Liebau (Ryan Liebau), and Loren Hesselgrave (Taylor Hesselgrave); four grand-children, Rowan Liebau, Lucy Liebau, Charlotte Liebau, and Lincoln Hesselgrave. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Hesselgrave and is survived by his mother Kathryn Hesselgrave. Also surviving are three sisters, Tammy (Al) Resch, Dawn (Mark) Fernando, and Cindy (Dan) Bertsche. Further survived by many other family and friends. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by his kindness and generosity.
As a Master Electrician, Robert took great pride in his profession and the relationships he built throughout his career. More than anything, he will be remembered for his generous spirit and willingness to help others. Whether mentoring a new apprentice, lending a hand to a friend or neighbor, being a proud dad cheering from the mat at wrestling tournaments, or running cross-country courses alongside his daughter and being the first one there to cheer her across the finish line, Robert always showed up for the people he loved. He also regularly donated platelets to help those in need, reflecting the selflessness and compassion that defined his life. Even after leaving this world, he continued his legacy of selflessness through the donation of his corneas, giving up to four individuals the priceless gift of sight.
Robert enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially fishing, hunting, and golfing. He always seemed to know the best fishing spots and took greater joy in watching his son, daughter, or wife catch a fish rather than catching one himself. He found happiness in life’s simple pleasures, from counting coins and sharing stories with family and friends to repeatedly watching Men in Black and making others laugh. Above all, his greatest joy came from supporting his family. He was a proud father, husband, and grandfather whose love, encouragement, and kindness left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.
Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation on Thursday, October 29, 2026, at Schmidt & Bartelt Funeral Home, W250 N6505 Highway 164 in Sussex from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with a funeral service to follow at 1:00 p.m. Burial will take place immediately afterward.
Bob's legacy of kindness, generosity, and unwavering love for his family will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
