Julie Carrig, passed away on July 11, 2026, at the age of 95. She was born February 28, 1931, in Erie Pennsylvania. Julie was the eighth of nine children born to Ukrainian immigrants, Nicholas and Theodora Tech.

She was raised on a dairy farm and attended school in a one room schoolhouse, Weed School, through the eighth grade. Julie attended Academy High School in Erie and was the first one in her family to attend college. She graduated from Mercyhurst College, attended advanced classes as one of the only women at Gannon College and then went on to work in DNA cancer research at the world’s first cancer research center, Roswell Park, in Buffalo, New York where her research was published. 

Julie met the love of her life, James (Jim) Carrig at a Red Cross winter ball. They spent the next forty years together until his death in 1996. After they married, Julie decided that she wanted to devote her time to raising her family instead of continuing in research. The couple had five children, Christopher Carrig, who preceded her in death in 2024, Mia (Greg) Whitcomb, Cynthia Carrig, Laura (Eric) Koepp and Eric Carrig. She had nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren whom she adored.

Julie was a woman ahead of her time, in choosing a career, raising a family and then returning to work once her children were raised. Education was always important to Julie. When she returned to work, she loved teaching English and Biology to Junior High School students, leading Great Books and Junior Great Books discussions and was actively involved in the American Association of University Women. She was a life-long learner and enthusiastically taught herself to play the balalaika, make wine and identify birds. She especially loved to watch the eagles nesting along the river near her house.

After losing her husband, Jim, Julie continued to successfully run his business for the next three years while serving as the director of Hospice for Whiteside County, Illinois. When she retired, she was asked to serve as ombudsman for Lutheran Social Services, a position she held until moving to Milwaukee to live closer to her children at age 80.

A ten-minute Eulogy will take place preceding the Funeral Mass that will be held at Lumen Christi Catholic Church, 2750 W. Mequon Rd., Mequon, Wisconsin on August 17, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. Visitation/reception will follow immediately at the church from noon until 1:30 p.m.
