James H. Schwingel, 86, passed away in Milwaukee, on June 16, 2026.
Jim was born in Milwaukee in 1939 to Orville and Adel Schwingel. He attended Messmer High School before studying architecture at the University of New Mexico and received an associate’s degree from MATC, ultimately settling into a career making custom industrial cutting tools.
Jim will be remembered for his outgoing nature, positive spirit, and wide-ranging interests. He was passionate about alternative architecture, including underground homes, public gardens, and designs that reflected harmony with nature. He especially enjoyed outdoor music concerts set in beautiful park landscapes.
A gifted artist, Jim spent decades designing and casting unique concrete lanterns that reflected his creativity and craftsmanship. Known for his booming laugh and easy ability to connect with anyone he met, he cherished his family and friends. He often reminded those he loved of the importance of maintaining meaningful connections and nurturing relationships throughout life.
He is survived by his son, Joseph (Joyce) Schwingel, daughter Jerri (Michael) Schwingel Puerner, grandchildren Emily (Marcial) Vargas, Audre (Matt) Weaver, Elsa (Luke) Walsh, and Will (Emily Rodriguez) Puerner, four great granddaughters, brother Don Schwingel, sister Mary Yehle, and his former wife and mother of his children, Lanell Hagler.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
