Wilson Emery Manion, age 90, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, steadiness, and quiet dedication. Born in January 1935 in Madison, Wisconsin, Wilson was truly the anchor of his family—reliable, patient, and deeply devoted to those he loved.
Wilson spent much of his childhood in Dodgeville, Wisconsin, where he was raised by his grandparents. His grandfather worked in the local mines, and from an early age Wilson learned the value of hard work, humility, and perseverance—values that would guide him throughout his life.
An active and curious man, Wilson found joy in many pursuits. He loved bicycling, sailing, woodworking, lawn care, and gardening. In retirement, he could often be found biking around Lake Mendota several afternoons each week, enjoying the rhythm of the ride and the beauty of the water. A proud owner of a catamaran sailboat, Wilson spent countless hours sailing on Lake Monona and Lake Kegonsa, happiest when the wind filled the sails.
Wilson discovered woodworking as a hobby in high school, a passion that stayed with him for decades. He lovingly crafted several pieces of furniture for his family—each one a lasting reminder of his skill, patience, and care.
His professional life was rooted in the grocery business, which he approached with integrity and commitment. Wilson began his career at Kroger in Dodgeville, eventually becoming a store manager. He continued in management roles in communities across Wisconsin, including Waupun, Fond du Lac, and Manitowoc, before finally settling back in Madison.
At the heart of Wilson’s life was his marriage to Shirley, his beloved wife of 70 years. The two met at a roller rink, a chance encounter that grew into a lifelong partnership filled with love, loyalty, and shared memories. Wilson was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a cherished member of his extended family, all of whom meant the world to him.
Wilson Emery Manion will be remembered for his steady presence, his gentle strength, and the deep love he gave so freely. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the work of his hands, and the countless lives he touched.
