Thomas Chandler Hayes, 73, of Oconomowoc, passed away peacefully at his home on June 29, 2025

For over 30 years, Tom dedicated his life to educating young people as a passionate and respected high school history and law teacher at Oconomowoc High School. He was an avid reader and history buff and could always be found with a stack of books by his side. Outside the classroom, he enjoyed sharing his love of sports by coaching football and wrestling, before hanging up his whistle to spectate countless soccer, track, and cross-country events for his children.

When he wasn’t teaching or coaching, Tom could be always found outdoors. He had a deep love for fishing, skiing, and golfing. National and historical parks held a special place for him, and he looked forward to sharing them with his family each summer. With winters spent on the slopes of the UP, spring breaks spent on the beach in Gulf Shores, and summers spent in Canada, Tom passed along his love of exploration and travel to his children Katy and Kyle. He lived a full and adventurous life and leaves behind a legacy of kindness that will be remembered by all who knew him.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Catharine Hayes, and his brother Don Hayes. He is survived by Kyle, Katy, and Amy Hayes, in addition to close family friends. The family would like to extend a very heartfelt thank you to Denny Reinhert for his friendship and care. A private service will be held to honor Tom’s life.
