Walter R. Schwartz MD died peacefully on October 4, 2024, Beloved husband of June for 62 years until her passing in 2018. Loving father of Linda Hutchins and Richard Schwartz. Grandfather of Joshua (Ruth) Hutchins, Johanna (Ryan Adamsons) Hutchins, Williams (Natalie Pannemann) Schwartz, and Steven Schwartz. Great Grandpa of Anne, Timothy, and Stephen Hutchins. He was preceded in death by son John (Sandy Grivett) Schwartz and son-in-law Douglas Hutchins.
Dr. Schwartz was born in Lancaster, Wisconsin to Walter L. Schwartz and Clara (nee Fischer). He attended the University of Wisconsin - Madison where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1952, and then graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Madison School of Medicine in 1955. While as an undergraduate student, he was a proud member of the UW-Madison Marching Band. After an internship in Marshfield, WI he served in the U. S. Army as a captain and medical officer. Upon completing a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Milwaukee County General Hospital from 1958 to 1961, he joined the practice of OB-GYN Associates in Wauwatosa, He was on staff at Lutheran Hospital, West Allis Medical Center, Elmbrook Hospital, and Milwaukee Children’s Hospital. He served in leadership roles as a member of the Wisconsin Medical Examining Board, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the Wisconsin Medical Society. He delivered over 5,000 babies over his career before retiring in 1994.
He married June Laedtke on August 11, 1956 and they enjoyed many years cheering on their football Badgers and attending the symphony and theater performances. Dad rarely missed his children’s school events, and in later years as his grandchildren took up musical instruments, he played his cornet along with them at family Christmas music gatherings. He was a long-time member of Apostle Presbyterian Church where he served on Session and joined other retired men in helping with odd jobs around the building.
Walter found time for some hobbies throughout his life. He owned four antique cars and especially liked going on outings with the Model T Club. He and June took many trips over the years, first internationally, then throughout the United States and Wisconsin. He appreciated the many friendships he made at Harwood Place and at Kiwanis.
We honor Walter Schwartz with a visitation on Saturday October 19, 2024 at Apostle Presbyterian Church, 1509 S. 76th Street, West Allis from 9:00 AM until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 AM. Entombment is at Wisconsin Memorial Park at 1:30 PM. Memorials to the Apostle Presbyterian Church are appreciated.
