At every opportunity he reminded us that he never liked kids. In an ironic twist, God rewarded him and his wife, Maggie, with six. The oldest son lamented their lack of self-control and the youngest insisted that it took six before they finally got it right. On the snowy afternoon of December 16th, George R. Schimmel passed peacefully, surrounded by a legacy of adoring loved ones, including his loving wife, those six children, and twelve grandchildren.
Born on February 5th, 1932, to Rudolf and Thekla Schimmel, Dad was a ‘Tosa boy growing up on 72nd and Hillcrest. He spent the summers of his youth at the family cabin up north on Big St. Germain Lake. He attended St. Bernard’s grade school, Marquette High, Marquette University and Marquette Law School. When Uncle Sam put Dad’s plans on hold, he left law school and his fiancé and dutifully served his country in Korea for two long cold years.
A respected trial attorney with the firm O’Neill, Schimmel, Quirk, and Carroll, SC, he practiced law in Milwaukee for over 50 years. He served the city of Wauwatosa as the prosecutor in Municipal Court for nearly 40 years.
We will forever remember Dad’s mangled attempts at German (mingled with Korean slang), his love of cats he named after WWII generals, root beer floats with his grandchildren, George Webb’s, and the gold dollar coins given away to many as an expression of his gratitude and of encouragement.
Dad treasured spending time with family and friends in St Germain. All were welcome. Nothing pleased him more than the camaraderie, antics, and monkeyshines on the lake. His legacy -- the cabin, the Lodge and pristine woods – will be enjoyed for generations to come.
George is survived by Maggie, his tolerant wife of nearly 60 years, his children George, Kate Henn (Terry), Jane Lukach (Stephen), Karl (Maureen), Annie aka Rooney, and Kristopher (Sara): twelve grandchildren; Grace, Kristopher, Henry, Emily (Alex Gohmann), Josephine, Annie-Kate, Sam, Karl L., Luke, Maggie, Martin, and Thomas, and favorite grand-puppy, Alice. He is further survived by his much older sister, Marge, numerous nieces and nephews, devoted friends, and lap cat, Major General Lucian K. Truscott III.
He will be missed.
Many thanks for the compassionate care provided by Horizon Homecare & Hospice.
In lieu of flowers and memorials, donations to the St Joseph’s Catholic Church Capital Campaign would be most appreciated.
