“As a child, model railroading helped develop my eye, which helps me in my work to fulfill a family’s every wish.”
Model railroading is a hobby that requires an attention for detail second to none. Pictured at his feet is no ordinary model railroad engine. It is, in fact, a 1951 F-unit Sante Fe locomotive from Lionel—a prized collection item by anyone’s standard. What makes it special is not that it looks exactly like the real one, but that it was built in the exact same year. (1951 in case you’ve already forgotten.) That’s what Phil loves about this hobby. But to fully understand it you’d have to see what he created in his basement with 300 feet of track and outdoors in his garden with 200 feet. It’s nothing short of amazing. Phil grew up in Illinois before attending college in Wisconsin, earning his degree from the then Milwaukee Mortuary School in 1977 and been with Schmidt & Bartelt ever since.
