John Peter Matsen
June 4, 1949 - June 30, 2015

Passed away unexpectedly, leaving us much too soon on June 30, 2015 at age 66. Beloved husband and dearest friend of Christine. Loving father of Peter Matsen. John is also survived by his siblings, Bette Matsen, Robert Matsen, James (Karen) Matsen and David (Marcia) Matsen; sister-in-law, Patricia (Trent) Naumann and brother-in-law, Michael Miles; as well as other caring relatives, many dear friends and colleagues.

John was devoted to his family. An intelligent man of many great tastes, who was equally savvy discussing his love for music, art and history as he was discussing his passion for sports, championing the Green Bay Packers. He was a car hobbyist, golfer, consummate foodie and traveler. Mechanically gifted, he challenged himself to fix almost anything. When his task was accomplished he would wryly repeat his favorite maxim, “It’s easy if you know how.” John shared his generous spirit and sense of humor with everyone.

Following service to his country in the US Army during the Vietnam Conflict, John attended the University of Wisconsin graduating from the College of Engineering. He became a widely respected structural engineer for over three decades and was founder and principal of Matsen Ford Design Associates, Inc. He was an active and beloved member of the AISI and CFSEI serving as former president of CFSEI.

John was respected and loved by many: he will be missed!

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 15, with visitation from 12 Noon until the time of Service at 2 PM at Wisconsin Memorial Park/ Chapel of the Flowers, 13235 W. Capitol Dr, Brookfield. Memorials in John’s name made to NPR at WUWM Milwaukee Public Radio or the University of Wisconsin Foundation, College of Engineering are deeply appreciated.
