George W. Culbertson, husband, father, “gramps”, passed away peacefully on Nov. 21 2014 at Shorehaven in Oconomowoc at age 95.  He was born in Milwaukee on Dec. 1, 1918 to Andrew and Anna (Kemink).  

He graduated from Washington High School and continued on to UW-Extension in Milwaukee and then to UW-Madison where he earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering.

During WWII he served as an Ensign in the Navy on a PT boat.

In 1945 he married the love of his life, Betty (Schmidt), having met her years earlier while both where students at UW-Extension.

During their 64 years together they raised three children and were actively involved in their church and community.  They enjoyed traveling to visit their many friends and relatives throughout the country, entertaining guests, dance club and bridge club.  Most of all they were devoted to their family.  George enjoyed gardening and maintaining his home of 52 years.  There was almost nothing around the house he couldn’t fix.

As a mechanical engineer George worked for several companies and was awarded 5 patents for his designs. His creativity continued even late in his career, as he was involved in the design of a bathtub lift, scooter and electric chair to assist the disabled. 

George was a true gentleman, with a quiet way and an affable sense of humor.  He will be deeply missed by all those who knew him.

George is survived by Glenn (Sonia), Douglas (Patricia) and Calvin, grandchildren Glenn Jr. (Emily), Glenda, and Katie and great grandchildren Eli and Nyah Raye.  George was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers Andrew (Catherine) and Charles “Bud” (Otillia "Tillie"). He was preceded in death by his wife Betty in 2009.

A celebration of his life will be held at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 815 S. Concord Road, Oconomowoc on Wednesday, Nov. 26. Visitation at 1:30 pm, services at 2:30 pm with refreshments to follow.  A private burial will be in Watertown Moravian Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the church or Oconomowoc Food Pantry are appreciated.
