October 22, 2013

Martin McMahon Bergquist, “Marty”, of Mequon, entered Eternal Life on Tuesday, October 22, 2013. He was born June 10, 1995 in Milwaukee, the son of Steven and Clare (Michael) Bergquist. He was a freshman at Purdue University studying engineering and a graduate of Homestead High School.

Marty was a vibrant member of the Homestead High School community. He was an excellent student who excelled in math and science. He had natural leadership skills, significant accomplishments in academics, theater, speech, sports and robotics, but will be most remembered for his sense of humor, humility and kindness. Marty was a member of the varsity cross country team and participated in track. He was a member of the Junior Classical League, Curling Club, emceed the AFS Talent Show, and was a member of the National Honors Society.  Marty was the drive team captain for the Homestead Robotics team that won a berth at the World Robotics Championship in 2012. He was also a member of the Forensics Team, and he placed first at the state competition in the category of storytelling his junior and senior years. Marty was a member and co-president of the Drama Club; participated in One Act state play competitions, had numerous roles in school productions and loved every aspect of theater. He was an active member of Christ Church, participated in First Stage and other community theater.  He was very grateful for and thoroughly enjoyed his summer internship at Rockwell Automation in Mequon. While he had not spent a lot of time on the Purdue campus, he loved Boiler Gold Rush, had done the fountain run, attended all home football games and did really well on his first set of exams. Marty was a Renaissance guy who enjoyed cooking, gardening, traveling, gaming, computers, building, tinkering, and engineering.  His gifts were many, he used them to their fullest capacity and he shared them with everyone. His senior quote in the yearbook summed up his life philosophy, “Love all, trust a few, do wrong to none” (William Shakespeare).

He is survived by his parents Steven and Clare of Mequon; his brother Michael and his sister Ingrid, both in college. He also leaves maternal grandparents Thomas and Dolores Michael of River Forest, IL; and his paternal grandparents Robert and Georgia Bergquist of Racine. He is survived by great aunts, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and an extremely special group of true friends.

The funeral will be held on Sunday, October 27 at 3 p.m. at Christ Church Episcopal, 5655 North Lake Dr. Whitefish Bay. Friends may greet the family in the Great Hall following the services. In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to consider a donation to The Marty Bergquist Memorial Fund which will support the Homestead High School theater program – one of the best places to learn life skills.
