Ann was born and raised in Kansas and went to Benedictine College. She taught high school English in a small Kansas town before receiving her MA degree at Marquette University in Journalism. She wrote her master's thesis on promoting Catholic social justice through journalism. Mom would support many social justice causes the rest of her life. She was feminist before its time. She worked at Marquette in the news bureau - public relations, and it was there on campus where she met Richard Panlener, who was a recent widower with six children. They married and had three more children, completing the "Panlener nine". After raising the family, she taught Journalism at Mount Mary College, and returned to Marquette's campus running the national office of the Jesuit Honor Society, Alpha Sigma Nu, as Executive Director, until her retirement. She was devoted to her family, her parish Holy Cross, St. Ben's Meal Program, the Milwaukee Ileostomy and Colostomy Association MICA, the Women's Health Initiative, and all things Marquette.
