Daniel J. Flaherty
August 7, 1941 - March 18, 2017

Daniel Joseph Flaherty (Dan) of East Troy, WI, born in Brooklyn, NY, to Patrick and Alice (nee Endreson) Flaherty on August 7, 1941, died peacefully in his sleep from complications of pulmonary fibrosis at the age of 75. Dan, a graduate of St. Francis Preparatory School and Fordham University in NY, is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Katherine Byrne Flaherty. He is further survived by his children Daniel C. (Angie) Flaherty of Mukwonago, WI; Christopher (Julie) Flaherty of Davidson, NC; Patrick (Alphonzo) Flaherty of Takoma Park, MD; Kevin (Warren) Flaherty of Milwaukee, WI; and Elizabeth (John) Greene of Waukesha, WI. He adored his grandchildren Keara Flaherty, Emma Flaherty, Clare Flaherty, Daniel B. Flaherty, Andrew Greene, Caoilinn Flaherty, and Corey Barczak, and great-grandson Owen Lee. Other survivors include his sister Claire Kirnan of New Jersey, and a host of loving extended family. He was pre-deceased by his parents, and siblings: Patricia, Michael, Donald, Susan, and William.

Dan is remembered for his love of family, pride in his Irish heritage, fondness for the Brooklyn Dodgers, his self-deprecating sense of humor, and sage advice. Dan retired as a property and casualty actuary and principal at Milliman, having founded Milliman's casualty practice in Milwaukee. While his proudest achievement was his family, his career highlights included serving on Milliman's board as well as the board of the National Casualty Actuarial Society. Dan's talent for numbers, astounding memory, and unselfish nature will be missed by former colleagues and family alike. Dan left this world surrounded by the love of immediate family after leading them in song with a memorable rendition of the Irish ballad "Danny Boy,"—the song which inspired his name.
